Slick Spot Sends One to Hospital after Losing Control and Overturning

Trooper Christopher Saunders is investigating a collision that occurred at 6:48 pm on Ky 55, 3 miles south of Columbia. Leroy Spencer (not belted) age 42 of Columbia, was operating a 1996 Chevy northbound on 55 when he hit a slick spot on the road, lost control, overturned and struck a utility pole. Spencer was transported by EMS to Westlake Regional Hospital and later transported to University of Kentucky Hospital. KSP Executed Warrant for Phillip Cape while in Intensive Care Unit

(Columbia, KY.) – Kentucky State Police Detective Mike Dubree has obtained an arrest warrant for Phillip Cape charging him with the attempted murder of Brandy Lawless.  The warrant was executed today at the Intensive Care Unit of the UK Medical Center where Cape remains in custody and in stable condition.

Adair County Man Arrested on Multiple Charges

(Columbia, KY.) – The Kentucky State Police are currently investigating an incident that occurred today at approximately 2:15 CST on Melson Ridge Road in Adair County. 60-year-old Phillip D. Cape was charged with Receiving Stolen Property over $10,000, DUI 2nd with aggravating circumstances, Resisting Arrest, Menacing and Driving on Suspended Operator’s License.

Investigators learned that Cape, operating a stolen 1999 Ford pickup, had been to the residence of 60-year-old Marcine Melson. While driving the truck, Cape intentionally drove through an attached porch of the residence and struck 3 persons…Melson, 30-year-old-Brandy Lawless and 63-year-old Irene Firkin. Melson, after being struck, retrieved a shotgun and fired a round at the Ford pickup. Cape was struck and drove the vehicle off of the roadway where it came to rest in a field.

When Troopers arrived on the scene, Cape was apprehended and treatment for his injuries sustained from the gunshot was administered by local EMS. He was later airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. The 3 victims struck by the vehicle were treated at the scene and transported to Westlake Hospital in Adair County where they are being treated for non life threatening injuries.

The calls to Post 15 originated from the Adair County dispatch. Detective Mike Dubree is investigating and more charges are expected.

Green County Women Found Dead in Her Car

54-year-old Janice Bledsoe was found deceased in her car on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in a remote area of Adair County.  Cause of death is yet to be determined and a preliminary autopsy report is pending.  No foul play is expected.  Kentucky State Police Detective B.J. Burton is investigating.

Mary Alice Rooks, age 85 years of 204 Montgomery St., Columbia, Ky. passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 1:17 A. M. at her home after illness.
She was the daughter of the late Ralph Lee & Hattie Carter Day born on July 5, 1925 in Grayson County, Ky. She was the widow of Charles Lewis Rooks who preceded her in death on June 12, 1996

Three Vehicle Injury Accident on Burkesville Rd

September 13th, 2010
Trooper Bradly Stotts is investigating a three vehicle injury collision that occurred on Burkesville Road in the limits of Columbia at 5:55 pm. Jason Keltner (belted), age 18 of Columbia, was operating a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on Burkesville Road, accompanied by a passenger, Mary Susan Coomer (belted) age 16, of  Columbia. Keltner failed to yield while executing a turn into Wal-Mart and struck a 1998 Ford Expedition operated by Tammy Kelsey (not belted), age 40 of Columbia. Kelsey was traveling northbound through the intersection. Brooke Cowan (belted), age 17 of  Columbia, was operating a 2007 Nissan Sentra accompanied by a  passenger, Taylor Coots (belted), age 17 of Columbia. Cowan’s vehicle struck by Keltner’s vehicle while they were stopped at a red light at the intersection. Keltner’s vehicle continued through the intersection and then overturned. Cowan and Kelsey were transported by Adair County EMS to Westlake Regional Hospital. Coots was transported by private vehicle to Westlake Regional Hospital. Kelsey was transported to U of L. Both Cowan and Coots were treated and released from Westlake Regional Hospital.
Trooper Bradly Stotts was assisted at the scene by Trooper Tracy Haynes, Columbia P.D., Adair County Sheriffs Department, EMS, Fire and Rescue.

KSP Traffic Checkpoints

September 7th, 2010

The Kentucky State Police, Post 15, Columbia, which provides coverage for Washington, Marion, Taylor, Casey, Russell, Green, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, Cumberland and Adair counties will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints at locations approved by the Kentucky State Police Policy and Procedures Manual. These checkpoints will be conducted in an effort to enforce the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Special attention will be paid to occupant protection (seatbelt adherence), sobriety and insurance and registration violations.

KSP Monthly Activity Report

September 7th, 2010

During the month of August, 2010, there were 30 traffic accidents investigated by the State Police working in the Post 15 area in the 11 counties of Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Marion, Metcalfe, Monroe, Russell, Taylor and Washington.

There were two fatalities during the month of July in the Post 15 area:

Shoffner, James Patrick; of New Haven, KY, was killed in Marion Co. KY on 08/14/10.
Johnson, James O.; of Russell Springs, KY, was killed in Casey Co, KY on 08/08/10.

This brings our yearly fatality count to 14 compared with 29 through this same period in 2009.

State wide fatality count stands at 493 compared with 519 through this same period in 2009.

During the month of August, 2010, there were 486 citations written, 137 courtesy notices written, 802 vehicles inspected, 881 complaints answered, 67 motorists assisted, 99 criminal cases opened and 113 criminal arrests made.
